What does mikoto mean?

mikoto in Japanese means prince, a special individual who will someday be king, When I think about what it means to be a prince it is all about the future optimism and hope. When someone puts on a mikoto shirt I want them to look and feel like a prince.

Tell me about the shirts?

All the shirts are American Apparel soft cotton. These shirt are made in America and are are ethically manufactured in LA meaning no poor little children are subject to slave labor which is a good thing. They cost slightly more but their quality and cut is superior. They are a slim fit shirt that is slightly longer than normal so that fits good and doesn’t end up too short after a few washes.

What about the prints on the shirts?

The designs have been printed in Australia meaning the business stay here in Oz.

What about the designs?

the designs are all inspired by Japanese culture and current trends in design & fashion. I adore the way the Japanese maintain their love of bright colours and cartoons throughout their lives. Their inner child is never forgotten and I think that is an important key to happiness in life. They are the most pleasant and happy people and I want my designs to capture that and hopefully remind people of their inner child.

Who are you?

My name is Scott Mellis, I live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches & teach Design & Technology at a local school. I graduated from the University of New South Wales’ College of Fine Arts with a bachelor of Art Education. I love the ocean and try to surf every day.

What lays ahead for mikoto?

To be honest I don’t know. I really want to continue designing characters for my little world. I also hope to have some jewelery made as I think it would look really cool.
